It was one of my favourite books and I read it multiple times. When I was younger, I would have given this a full 5 out of 5 stars. The book is a little advanced, because setting the diary in the past takes a bit of world-building.

The Dear Canada series is aimed for readers aged 9 and up, but advanced readers in Grade 7 or 8 could tackle this book with help or taking more time. In this moving and interesting view of historical events, readers will get a better understanding of life as it was when Canada was just lifting off. Shortly into the voyage, Catherine falls deathly ill, and Helene is offered her sister’s place as a filles a marier. Now Helene must decide if she will return to France, or take a chance in the New World with a stranger. Catherine is a “ filles a marier”, which is a woman sent as part of a program sponsored by Louis XIV to marry a man and bear children in Canada. Onge is a 13-year-old French girl who is sent to Canada with her older sister Catherine. Alone in an Untamed Land by Maxine Trottier
